Population and demography of Piazza Armerina

The demographic evolution of Piazza Armerina Unification of Italy to date has followed developments very erratic. In 1861, in fact, was surveyed a population of 21,716 souls, even slightly higher than today, given that the then Piazza was the center of today's biggest province of Enna.

Subsequently, however, a recession, the effects of which remained visible until the beginning of the twentieth century, when Piazza reached the 24,000 pop. and, in principle, inter alia, with clearly positive demographic trends in other cities of the province, went on to share more than 30,000, marking the historic peak of 38,000 pop. In 1921, the year that exceeded 5,000 souls of Enna and Caltagirone than 2,000. The decrease that took place in the coming decade was impressive, in that in 1931 the city stood at 25,000 units, designed to share verge 21,000 in 1981, a period of real crisis, triggered by the closure of the last working pit.

Today, the trend is slightly negative, but to a lesser extent than other towns of the Sicilian hinterland. There are, however, real opportunities for growth, mainly linked to the restoration of the Villa del Casale and tourism.
